Dos sujetos que se movilizaban en una motocicleta hurtaron en la mañana del 31 de enero dinero de un casino ubicado en la calle 8 con carrera 16 del municipio de Aguazul, a media cuadra del Terminal de Transportes.
Según reporte de las autoridades, los individuos ingresaron al sitio de juego donde se encontraba el administrador realizando el arqueo diario, lo agredieron causándole una herida en la cabeza y se llevaron la mencionada suma de dinero.
Los sujetos huyeron hacia el sector de Cupiagua y las autoridades fueron alertadas activando un plan candado, donde se realizó la persecución de los delincuentes, que al notar la presencia de los uniformados dejaron abandonada la motocicleta a orilla de la carretera y se internaron en el monte. También dejaron abandonada una parte del dinero, los cascos utilizados y otros elementos.
Inicialmente se especuló que era un monto cercano a los 50 millones de pesos, cifra que el administrador del lugar no especificó, más tarde dijo a la Policía que eran 13 millones y posteriormente se lograron recuperar 5 millones.
En esta acción policial, además de recuperar el dinero en efectivo, se logró también la incautación de un arma traumática, la motocicleta y otros elementos como cascos y chaquetas utilizadas en el atraco.
Se conoció que durante la persecución la Policía llegó hasta la vivienda de uno de los sujetos donde fue entregado a las autoridades por su propio padre, quien le pidió que asumiera la responsabilidad en el hecho y se entregara sin oponer resistencia.
